At TechLeadout, we partnered with Mona Health to develop a comprehensive online platform for sexual health education, consultations, treatment, and support. Our mission was to create a safe, judgment-free space where individuals could discreetly and conveniently access the resources and services they need.


Founders' vision

Mona founders understood the challenges people faced when seeking sexual healthcare: stigma, misinformation, and limited access to resources. They envisioned a solution – a digital platform that would provide accurate information, essential products, and confidential consultations, all in one safe, judgment-free space.
Mona's vision was to break down barriers and encourage open conversations around sexual health. Recognizing the challenges ahead, they sought our expertise to overcome these challenges and create a platform that would truly serve their users' needs.
Project challenges
Time is of the essence when launching a startup. Before partnering with TechLeadout, Mona Health was losing valuable time with a slow and unreliable platform. Built by multiple contractors, the system was plagued by performance issues and bugs, while the design failed to capture their vision. They needed a team that could move fast and deliver a high-quality product – without the headaches.
Our process
Discovery and planning
We began with a user experience audit, where we thoroughly analyzed the existing platform. We assessed the site structure, layouts, imagery, and navigation, providing detailed feedback on areas of improvement.
In conjunction with the audit, we collaborated closely with Mona’s founders, learning about their vision and gaining a nuanced understanding of their users' needs. This collaborative deep-dive paved the way for a strategic redesign, ensuring the new platform would be both user-friendly and deeply aligned with Mona's mission.
Design approach
To address Mona's platform's design inconsistencies and functional issues, we prioritized building a comprehensive design system as the foundation for the new platform. This system would ensure consistency, speed up development, and allow for easier scaling in the future. We then meticulously crafted reusable components, including buttons, inputs, and menus, ensuring a consistent brand identity and user experience.

Our approach centered on enhancing aesthetics while simultaneously streamlining navigation, improving page layouts, and creating a clear organizational structure.
Empathy-driven user experience
Recognizing the sensitive nature of sexual health, we prioritized empathy throughout the design process. We understood that users might be experiencing urgency, anxiety, or uncertainty.
To create a calming and reassuring experience, we simplified the user interface, making navigation intuitive and effortless. A carefully chosen color palette, featuring soft, soothing tones and shapes, further enhanced the sense of comfort. We replaced clinical jargon with clear, relatable language, ensuring users felt understood and respected.
Throughout the user journey, from initial exploration to scheduling consultations and obtaining medication, we provided clear guidance and relevant information, offering support every step of the way.
Tailored purchasing and communication user flows
Unlike typical e-commerce platforms, Mona's medication selection and checkout process required tailored approaches based on specific medications. Some products allowed immediate ordering, while others necessitated medical consultation or long-term subscriptions. In close collaboration with Mona's founders, we gained a deep understanding of the platform's medication offerings and developed customized purchasing and checkout flows for each medication.
Another critical aspect of the platform was patient communication with the Mona team. We focused on streamlining the appointment scheduling process to benefit both patients and providers. Understanding the unique needs of each group, we redesigned the appointment chat to facilitate effective and efficient communication.

The existing platform's performance was unstable and sluggish, hindering the user experience. We delved into the codebase, performing a thorough analysis that revealed significant technical debt. It was clear that a major overhaul was necessary to ensure scalability, maintainability, and long-term performance.
Our team refactored and rewrote most of the platform's components, creating a clean, efficient, and robust codebase. We also implemented rigorous quality assurance practices to ensure the platform's stability and pave the way for future growth. This solid foundation was essential for the successful implementation of the new, user-centric design.

Our collaboration with Mona Health culminated in the successful launch of a transformative sexual health platform. Through close collaboration with founders, and leveraging empathy-driven design, we delivered an exceptional user experience, making it easier than ever for individuals to access vital resources, products, and support.
